Our dream of cruising on a boat Around the Great Circle Loop and beyond has the drawback of leaving our friends and family far away from us for an extended time. This blog is intended to keep you up to date on our travels and adventures, and encourage you to join us for some part of our trip as we make our way around the waterways of the eastern US, Canada, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Click on the archived posts below to follow our journey. Our dog, Ben, has been helping us write this blog since he has more time!

Connecticut Visits - Jeff is Attacked

Hi All...Ben here in Connecticut,
We left the pretty Northport, NY harbor and went out into the Long Island Sound to cross over to Stamford, Connecticut. It was a real sunny day and a lot of people were out in their boats on the water having fun. We pulled into the marina and took a little walk before our friend Vickie came to meet with us on the boat for dinner. She lives in Stamford, but we usually see her when she comes to California to visit with her sister and mom (Marlene and Janet). Too bad her hubby, Johan, was out of town and unable to join us. We had a nice dinner on the boat, and Izzy and Jeff bored her with their tales of boating.

I’m sure she would have rather played with me or taken me for a walk, but they kept her in her chair and wouldn’t let her go. Here’s a picture of them keeping her captive while Izzy holds me between he knees so I couldn't get my leash. Vicky is very nice, so she’s trying to look like she’s having a good time. She gave us some good tips on what to see in the area over the next couple of days while we travel with Pete and Mary Lou. Thanks for coming to visit us Vicky. See you next time in California!
The next morning Pete and Mary Lou arrived. They had been visiting with relatives in the area and took the opportunity to spend a couple of days with us on the “Izzy R” before going back home to Roseville, CA. Pete was boating with Jeff and Izzy about 10 years ago for a week charter in Florida when they first got the “bug” for this lifestyle. So he was very excited to have a second boating adventure with us and made a plan early in our trip to meet along our route. He dusted off his Captain’s hat and jumped right into the swing of things, checking out the engines and planning our route along the Connecticut coast for the next couple of days.I’m not so sure if Mary Lou was as excited, but she was definitly a good sport, and put up with the inconveniences. For instance, she’s only about four and a half feet tall, and getting into that high v-berth bed required a good “goose” from Pete each time. Then they’d giggle and joke. I think she enjoyed that and looked forward to it each day because she used the excuse of having to taking a nap in the afternoon I saw a twinkle in her eye - and I think she just liked the getting-into-bed process! She’s pretty feisty. Oh, did you hear about the horrible incident that Jeff had with the crazed fire hydrant? Well, one afternoon we arrived early at a town called Norwalk. Mary Lou got that twinkle in her eye so she and Pete went off to take a nap while Izzy and I busied ourselves with writing the blog and organizing photos. Jeff decided to take a walk into town to scope out a place for us to go for a nice dinner. He picked up a map of the town and was looking at it as he walked down the street lined with cafes and people sitting outside having food and fun. He was so engrossed in looking at the map that he neglected to see the psycho fire hydrant that was about to attack him.His first realization was when it hit him about crotch high as he was traveling at a pretty good clip.By that time he was too far over it to back up, and the momentum was carrying him even further forward. He stood on his tiptoes trying to lift one leg then the other to get over the attacking hydrant, but it was fiercely holding on to the crotch of his jeans shorts. As the fire hydrant tightened it's grip on Jeff, he heard a loud rip and then another…the crotch monster wouldn’t let go! His attempts to extricate himself from the knobby attacker were futile. Each movement caused another “rrrrrripp” on the shorts that were quickly becoming a skirt. He teetered on one foot and then the other still grasping the map in one hand as the restaurant guests watched and laughed. When he finally managed to get out of the clutches of the fire hydrant, he hurried off down the street without looking back, trying to pull his new “skirt” down far enough so no one would notice his “commando” status. Needless to say, the walk home, the long way around to avoid passing the same people, must have been entertaining to many more along the way who hadn’t actually seen the attack.. When he arrived back at the boat still clutching the map, Izzy laughed so hard she woke up Pete and MaryLou.
Later that night on our way to dinner we went back to the scene of the crime, and I showed Jeff the proper technique for peeing on fire hydrants. I've never been attacked by a fire hydrant...I guess he just needs more practice.
Sometimes Izzy gets the giggles just thinking about that day.
We’re going back to New York City tomorrow to meet up with Gilbert and Doreen. There must be plenty of fire hydrants there for him to practice. I’ll sign out for now and take a well deserved nap.
Love,
Ben
