Our dream of cruising on a boat Around the Great Circle Loop and beyond has the drawback of leaving our friends and family far away from us for an extended time. This blog is intended to keep you up to date on our travels and adventures, and encourage you to join us for some part of our trip as we make our way around the waterways of the eastern US, Canada, the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Cape May to New York City

Hi All...Ben here,
On our last night in Cape May, we had a fun party on our boat for the group of “loopers” that had gathered in the marina with us over the past couple of days. We had twelve people onboard for wine and cheese, and I got a lot of attention and petting before everyone walked over to the Lobster House for dinner. I stayed and guarded the boat and got some good leftovers when Jeff and Izzy came home.
I was just starting to like Cape May and Utsch Marina, but the next morning when I was out with Jeff on my leash taking my morning constitutional, a big German Shepard jumped out of his owner’s car and attacked me. I don’t know what got into that psycho-dog, but he must have mistaken me for another dog that was fooling around with his wife or something.
Jeff tried to beat the heck out of that mean dog, but his only weapon was the trash bag he was carrying. He must have hit home with a wine bottle or something in the trash bag, because psycho-dog finally let go of my leg with his big teeth. I think Jeff was frightened too, but he wasn’t yelping like I was. He was saying some loud words that I didn’t understand to the dog’s owner. We quickly got out of there and came home to have Izzy rub my leg and make it feel better, and then she gave me some treats. I’m glad Jeff and Izzy drink wine from those big bottles. From Cape May we had to go out into the ocean for our next ride to Atlantic City, because the water in the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway is too shallow for our boat. Bright and early the next morning we left with three of our other boat friends to make the trip. Here's a picture of "Theresa", with our friends Bob and Theresa inside, in the morning sunlight as we headed up the east coast. The sea was calm so we had a nice ride and Izzy took some pictures of the coast line as we got near Atlantic City. Those big buildings are the casinos where lots of boaters take their money for some reason. We stayed in a little marina called Kammerman'swith a nice black dog named Carson. That afternoon we went to the boardwalk with Theresa and Bob. I took this picture of Jeff and Izzy. There were alot more of those big buildings here where you can take your money. We kept our money in our pockets, except for Theresa, who gave her money to the saltwater taffy building. They gave her some good treats in exchange, and she shared with us.
It was warm and sunny so there were lots of sunbathers on the beach, and a real busy bar on the sand that had loud music and lots of people dancing and laughing. I hope we don't take the count over the limit! How would they know?
Kammerman's Marina had a barbeque and firepit that Jeff and Izzy used for dinner that night. They wanted me to stay on the boat on guard duty, but I wanted to join them, so I just stood there and looked sad until Izzy came and got me.When it got dark, the casinos across the bay turned on their lights and gave us a pretty show from our stern. The lights changed colors and patterns all night long.I think they wanted us to go over and give them some of our money. The next day was another ocean riding day, to get us to Manasquan, NJ, where there was real shallow water in the harbor and lots of wind. There was a big shrimp boat fishing near the harbor entrance too.But Jeff used his magic to get us onto a safe spot on the dock at Arnold's Brielle Yacht Marina while Izzy took care of the fenders and lines. I put on my vest and waited patiently for a walk.Using the "yard" on the boat is too tricky when we're out in the ocean. Good thing I have a healthy bladder. If you can believe it, the next day they went out into the ocean AGAIN! They're really trying my patience with the "out at sea-no pee" days! I hope they figure out a way to get back into calmer water tomorrow. This time we came into New York Cityand they spent a lot of time taking pictures of all the sights in the harbor. Here are some of them: Theresa and Bob took this one of us in front of the Statue of Liberty, and this one of us in front of the New York City skyline. There were some old looking boats sailing in the harbor getting ready for the celebration of the 400 year anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River. We saw lots more of these as we continued north up the Hudson River over the next couple of weeks.Since it was still pretty early when we pulled into the harbor, we decided to take a spin up the East River for a little sightseeing. The current was strong in the East River going against us, so we went pretty slow on the way up, but pretty fast on the way back down! There are lots of famous buildings in this picture - like the Empire State building on the left, the Chrysler building in the center, and the UN building on the right. And this is the Brooklyn Bridge...and the Staten Island Ferry. And this is a big barge pushing a load down the East River. We came back down the East River in half the time with the current pushing us, and slid into the Liberty Landing Marina across the Hudson River from the bottom of Manhattan. The marina is marked by a lighthouse boat with and showers and bathrooms inside. I didn't get to see any of that since I have my own "yard" right here. I don't think this big boat has been floating for a long time, but it looks pretty cool here. This is the view I got on my walks from the end of the marina across to Manhattan. Ground Zero is right in there somewhere - only a 5 minute water taxi away. After getting settled in to our slip, Jeff and Izzy joined Bob and Theresa on a trip to Manhattan to have dinner and see the sights. Here they are in Times Square, where the city has recently made some of the streets a pedestrian area, and put out chairs and some tables for visitors to stop and relax in the hubbub of the city. I think that's a great idea...much more dog friendly.
They had pizza in the theater district and wandered around to Rockefeller Center. This is the view of our marina entrance as they were waiting for the Water Taxi back home. It's known as the Colgate Clock, and they say it really tells time. I wouldn't know. The next day before it rained a lot, I went for a long walk in the park beside our marina with Izzy, then Izzy and Jeff took the bikes and did a bike ride there too. In the afternoon I stayed home as the OWD while they took the water taxi to Manhattan and went to the Guggenheim Museum to see the Frank Lloyd Wright display and then to Chinatown in the rain for Szechuan dinner. Jeff said the spicy food made Izzy's face a red as a beet. (what's that?) Luckily they didn't bring me any leftovers.
We're outta here tomorrow for a ride to Northport, Long Island to visit with BJ and other family for a couple of days. I think we have to go back up the East River again in the strong current. I guess it'll be a long ride! I hope I'll get a walk first.
Love,
Ben
